HYDROLOGY AT ISLA CONTOY

Isla Contoy does not have any type of fresh water, however, there are five different inland bodies, which are considered salt water, which are made up of:

  • Laguna Muerta
  • Laguna Pajera del Norte
  • Laguna Pajera Central
  • Laguna Pajera del Sur
  • Laguna las Garzas

During the rainy season and high tide there are occasional bodies of water, which are depressions with little or no vegetation, which are flooded and create these aquifer formations.

The direction of the ocean currents in the Caribbean is towards the west-northwest, which eventually reach the Yucatán coast. South of Cozumel Island, the center of the current turns northward and aligns with the coast to move into the Yucatán Channel, originating the current that bears its name, which can reach speeds of 7.41 km/h east of Cabo Catoche.

Since almost all of the surface water entering the Caribbean moves through the Yucatán channel, very high velocities are recorded at this point, which can exceed 7.41 km/h at a distance of 34 to 54 km east of Cabo Catoche. From here, the current again changes its course to the northwest, tending to align with the continental shelf boundary, although its exact location varies during the year. Near Isla Contoy a seasonal phenomenon of upwelling occurs, which makes the area one of the richest in terms of productivity, favoring the formation of food chains that generate sufficient food for the diversity of birds that reside on the island. This is also the reason why whale sharks can be sighted west of Contoy.
